How to ask your friends / oppa(오빠) to speak in banmal(반말) politely?
In South Korea, you're suppose to speak in honorific speech(존댓말) when you first meet someone / you're not close with that person / when speaking with elders.
Example of 존댓말(jondaetmal)
같이 갈래요? (gat-i gallaeyo?) - Would you like to go together?
알겠습니다 (algessseubnida) - Okay
You will need to ask permission or agreement with the person you're talking to, whether can you guys speak in 반말 (banmal ) / non-formal. Some people might feel uncomfortable when speaking 반말 (banmal ) / non-formal with someone they barely know.
This is how you can ask,
우리 말 놓자 (uli mal nohja)
Let's drop the honorific
말 편하게 하자 (mal pyeonhage haja)
Let's talk freely
After the person agrees, you can start speaking in non-formal / banmal(반말)
Example of 반말
지금 어디야? (jigeum eodiya?)
Where are you now?
야, 뭐해?(ya, mwohae)
Hey, what are you doing?
Any questions? :D Labels: banmal, honorific, 반말, 존댓말
